Lesson Overview

Children will be standing in a circle in a spacious area in class. Outside the circle where everyone can see, Teacher Imaan will place a huge game chart on an easel. In the centre of the circle, there will be a huge dice for the children to roll. The chart will state what activity the children need to do if they roll a certain number.

Lesson Objectives

Adapted from Ministry of Education, 2013

Children will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate coordination and balance when carrying out gross motor activities.

  2. Work and play cooperatively

Procedure:

  1. Teacher to explain the rules and how to play the game.

    • Introduce the materials

    • Explain the purpose of the materials

    • What they are supposed to do

  2. Get the children to stand in a circle at the designated area to play the game. Remind them to provide space for their friends by spreading their arms to their sides to create that distance.

  3. Get the first child to roll the dice and ask them what is the action that they have to do based on the chart.

    • If the teacher plans to play the activity more than one time, she could change the actions for each round.

    • The children can also suggest what actions they wish to do

  4. The action must be done by all the children in class.

  5. If a child faces difficulty in performing the action, the teacher can assist them by demonstrating the action and then allowing them to try it out by themselves.

  6.  After everybody gets a turn, the teacher can repeat the game one or two more times.

Teaching Technique

Demonstration

Teaching Technique

Rationale for Demonstration

Demonstration helps to speed up children's ability to grasp a concept. With effective demonstration, children can concentrate on developing their skills rather than having to figure out how to perform on their own. It also provides with substantial knowledge and techniques for children to perform the action without hindering their creativity and experimentation capabilities.

How It Was Used During The Lesson

In the video, a child was having trouble balancing on one foot and was in need of assistance. Teacher Imaan helped her by breaking down the action, step-by-step so that the child would be able to follow through easily. The language used by Teacher Imaan is also age-appropriate as it was simple and coherent, making it easy to understand. Aside from the verbal explanation, she demonstrated the action by doing the action as well. It allowed the child to better visualise what needs to be done to balance on one foot.  Hence, Teacher Imaan effectively displayed demonstration by providing succinct step-by-step guidance without hindering the child's creativity. Her guidance helped the child to grasp the techniques easily and was able to perform the action.

How To Apply During Other Lessons?

Be sensitive to a child's ability level and recognise their individual needs

Include a variety of verbal and non-verbal guidance to aid children in completing the activity

Provide more materials (video, audio and pictorial guidance) to help children visualise and better understand the concepts
