Lesson Overview

Following the topic of "Occupation", Teacher Dian has come up with an activity for the children. Titled "What Do They Do?", children will be required to find out more about the four occupations - nurses, postmen, teachers and police officers. In groups of three, they will be using different resources to do their research and record their findings. At the end of the lesson, the children will be required to share with their peers what they have found.

Co-Constructing

Teaching Technique

Rationale for Co-Constructing

Co-constructing refers to teacher and children forming meaning and building knowledge about the world with each other (MacNaughton & Williams, 2009).

Co-constructing enables children to like what they are learning and shows a higher achievement, better self-esteem and a greater social competency (Levine & Munsch, 2018). It also enables children to reconstruct their own meaning and these meanings are socially shared and negotiated.

How It Was Used During the Lesson?

Teacher Dian allowed the children to find out more about the different occupations. The children used a variety of resources to do their research and used the writing materials provided to write down their findings.

Afterwards, there was a sharing session where the children will share the information they have found with their peers. Questions are also asked to allow children to think critically. Teacher Dian displayed their findings on a wall so that the children will be able to refer whenever they want to.

How To Apply During Other Lessons?

Emphasise the study of meanings rather than the acquisition of facts

Encourage children to gather descriptions, data, information and figures

Document children's ideas
