Teaching Technique
Documentation
Rationale for Documentation
According to Seitz (2008), PhD from NAEYC, one thoughtful teacher could use documentation to prolong and extend an unexpected learning opportunity.
Documenting individual growth requires a great deal of research, as the teacher must observe each child in a variety of areas of development (such as social-emotional, cognitive, language, and motor) over a substantial length of time (Seitz, 2008).

By making learning visible through documentation, it reveals not only what children are learning but how they are learning (Yu, 2008).

How It Was Used During The Lesson
Teacher Rina document the children’s artworks, processes through photographs and videos taken while the children are in the midst of making their faces on the plates.
She demonstrates by writing down all answers given by the children despite the probability of being right or wrong. This is to allow children to see answers they have driven as physical evidence of their thought processes.

Teacher Rina takes pictures of everything that is on the board to help her plan future lessons and also build on the existing knowledge the children has and what was already being taught on that day.

Teacher Rina also made the children write what they feel instead of just expressing through art. This way, the children documented what they felt and why they have felt a certain way. Next time, they will be able to go back to the board and remember everything they had done.

How To Apply During Other Lessons?
Tap on children's uniqueness, strengths and weaknesses
Encourage children to find joy in things they do
Ask about the children's progress and take pictures
